My love for books is apparently contagious. My children love them. They beg for the same titles to be read over and over again. I have Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Jamberry nearly memorized. Not to mention Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
Books inspire my children in their imaginary play worlds. My daughter’s love of books (and the fact that I sometimes do strange things like wash dishes rather than reading to my children ALL DAY LONG) even spurred her on to learn to read fluently at a young age.
But the first thing my children each learned to do is eat books. Since they all got their teeth early they could even chomp the spine off a board book.
So my youngest got “indestructible” books for his first Christmas gift.
These books have thin pages similar to a regular picture book, yet they’re so tough Jonathan can have his way with them. If they get too nasty, I can even throw them in the washing machine.
A mom of triplets, Amy Pixton, created the books “after bits of traditional board books found their way into her babies’ mouths.” Now this is just my theory, but with triplets in the house I’m guessing lunch was five minutes late one day and—POOF!— Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was gone just like that.
These books also make a nice replacement for the coffee table books you had to put up when the baby came home. The artwork is beautiful. It’s also fun to watch your guests first cringe when the baby attacks the books— and then cringe as they can’t resist pulling at them a bit to see if they’re really “indestructible.”
The books don’t actually have any words inside, but are designed for parents or siblings to make up a story as they flip through the pages.
And these books provide a perfect opportunity for my baby to actually get good at turning the pages before he gets his hands on regular picture books.
Because it would be a shame if anything ever happened to a book like Green Eggs and Ham. Really. It would be a shame. I just want to keep reading it. Over and over and over and over again. Really.
Note: I may receive commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Remember, to think carefully before purchasing. You may have to read the book mentioned above exactly three trillion times in the next five years.
